I am currently engaged in science education to high school students. It goes without saying, but COVID-19 has had an unexpected impact on the field of science education and brought significant changes in educational methods, tools, etc. In the future, such unpredictable triggers (including technological innovations) will occur again and again, bringing further changes to the field of science education.
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about "Midjourney (Official website: https://www.midjourney.com/home/)," an artificial intelligence (AI) program that creates paintings based on instructions given by text such as words and sentences. For example, here are some scenes of future science education drawn by this AI under the instruction "science class at a school of the future, ultra-high definition, realistic". Since these are just "paintings", people feel or interpret differently even for the same ones. I myself felt a little uneasy about the fact that I could not find out clearly the teacher's presence in each painting. No matter how the times change, I hope that teachers and students will work together to develop attractive science education. Also, in order to do so, I believe that we teachers need to constantly ask ourselves the meaning of our existence as teachers.
